Is Juice Cleanse Right For You?
Human body is a marvellous machine. It has the ability to do the impossible and yet we don’t treat it the way we should. Yes, you and I both exercise and eat right but is that enough? Why do we need to Juice Cleanse and should we do it?
Always consult your doctor before starting any program or diet. If you suffer from any disease or condition you must not start anything on your own.
I don’t think that it should be done to the extreme as many websites suggest. We should maintain the delicate balance of cravings and exercising, this only can do justice to our body. We must know when to stop. If you think that taking fruit juices is juice cleanse then think again. The better part of this juice cleanse should be veggie juices. You can mix veggie juice with fruit juice to enhance the nutritional value and flavor.
Shouldn’t We Question Everything!
Now most of us ask- “What about the annual cleaning and de-junking of our bodies?”
Yes, I can say for sure that even if we exercise daily we cannot maintain that energy for all day and all year long to keep our workout to the optimum.
Sometime we change our routines, cheat on our diets, eat junk and think that running a mile extra the next day will take care of the beers and the snacks and sugars and burgers and so on.
Oh! You really thought that this will work. No, it won’t and before we know we are gaining weight, becoming lazy and what not.
Actually, we do come to know when our clothes don’t fit anymore. So, what do we do? Hmm, we give a break to our food habits and body, to recover. We do not overhaul the body because it the most efficient piece of organism.
How to give a break to the body that it could recover?
Every civilization at any given time of its evolution has advocated fasting. Only consuming water and or a small amount of fruits and vegetables.
In today’s world and time there are a number of options like instead of taking just water, we can Juice Cleanse. Juices have the largest variations any food can have, that are known to us.
This cleansing with juices is tried and tested by celebrities like Beyonce, Salma Hayek, Gwyneth Paltrow.
That said the question is still there- should we Juice Cleanse?
It’s not a bad idea to give our bodies a break but I would suggest not to do juice cleanse if you don’t require it. Today’s juice cleanses contain around 1000 to 1500 calories a day so, you are not actually starving calorie wise.
So, you are still sold that you need to do juice cleanse, then so be it. Before you begin the juice cleansing you need to pre-cleanse.
What is a pre-cleanse?
Pre-cleanse is the priming of habits before actual cleansing. You prepare your body for the actual cleanse.
These can be but not limited to:
- Stop eating junk food
- Stop taking alcohol
- Stop smoking
- Stop caffeine
- Eliminate all the processed food
- Drink more water
- Have green tea
- Avoid animal products
- Eat more vegetables and fruits
- Cut back on sugar
If you are on the junk food diet or processed food diet then you need 4 to 5 days of pre-cleanse before actual juice cleanse. This step itself will cleanse your system pretty much.
If you are eating food rich in fats and sugar you need 3 to 4 days of pre-cleanse. You are drinking coffee and smoking you still need 3 to 4 days of pre-cleanse.
It is rare in these days not to drink soda and other sugary drinks, if you are one of them but otherwise you eat home cooked vegetables and food then you still need a day of pre-cleanse, that is cutting back on sugar.
What to actually do in a pre-cleanse period?
- Start eating vegetables (if organic then much better)
- Start having adequate water
- Start drinking green tea
- Start having healthy home food (No, takeout’s to your home doesn’t mean home food)
- And do all the (10)steps that are given in above paragraph
You may have read or heard that it’s a 6 days or 7 days program, but this is not right, some researchers point out.
It is a good idea to give body a break for 2 to 3 days with juice cleanse. Do not go overboard with this program.
A few days of pre-cleanse and 2 to 3 days of juice detox is enough for the body to reach optimal levels of functioning.
What are the cons if we do juice cleanse for more than 3 days?
First and foremost it is not the ideal way to lose weight. The weight that you lose by this system, comes back eventually and is not effective in the long run. This is not healthy.
Secondly the sugars in juices might lead to- abrupt drop or spike in blood sugar levels if juice cleansing is carried for more than 3 days. And even if you do it right, you will not be able to concentrate on work due to deprivation of solid food and it will cause mood swings.
You will also miss out on fibre that you get on a regular healthy diet. So, why it will work for 3 days?
This is a tricky question. For three days you have the resolve to do it by the book but by the third day your body starts craving other foods that you are used to. To overcome most of us start to cheat with a bar of chocolate or some milk product or coffee. This defeats the whole process that you went through painstakingly.
Let me tell you the that human body is very effective and cleanses itself on a daily basis but sometimes due to over eating of junk food and sugars it gets out of balance. If the body is more alkaline it will not get sick. This means more greens on your plate. This balanced food approach if maintained consistently gives the best results life long.
In 3 days whatever waste that was accumulated in the body gets thrown out. You get the most out of the juices as they are mostly vegetable juices and less sugary fruit juices.
The more number of days you are on the juice you tend to lean towards fruit juices that are rich in sugar and this is bad for your health. So, stick to 3 days and not more.
I repeat- always consult your doctor before starting any program or diet. If you suffer from any disease or condition you must not start anything on your own.
The other advantages of juice cleanse is that you can try vegetables and fruits that are new to your daily intake. This way additional nutrition is available to your body that you do not have on normal days.
Your digestive system gets a much needed break with this type of juice cleanse and that is it. It’s not a miracle or something.
Now, what kind of juices should you take?
Don’t confuse juice with smoothie. They are two different things. How?
Juices doesn’t contain fibre whereas smoothie contains that whole vegetable or fruit along with the fibre. It also contains milk or yogurt that we put in to blend all these mix together like a smoothie of say, spinach and strawberry with milk or yogurt.
You should take juices of fruits and vegetables that are seasonal and local in your area. Don’t go for out of season veggies and fruits. Avoid adding sugar to the juices.
Drink the juices every 2 to 3 hours five to six times a day. The veggie component should be higher then the fruit part. This will make sure that you do not get a sugar spike.
Make sure to have a balance of nutrients in the juices by combining veggies and fruits. You can take a probiotic to enhance your protein absorption or efficacy.
Some of the recipes are as follows. These are some common juices, you can mix and match and try new vegetables and fruits combos.
Juice all of them. Preferably lemon should be juiced separately without the juicer.
- 2 Apples
- 1 Lemon
- 2 Cucumber
- 1/2 pcs Ginger piece
Carrot and Beets Tango
- 6 Carrots
- 1/2 pcs Ginger
- 1 Lemon
- 1 Beetroot
Apples and Oranges
- 2 Oranges
- 1 Green Apple
- 1 Kale leaf
- 1 Lemon
- 1/2 pcs ginger
- 1 Cup spinach
- 2 Celery Stalk
- 2 Kale leaf

It is better to take a balanced diet instead of fasting for long times. Exercise daily, go for a walk, socialize, eat more greens, take care of your body and keep a positive approach towards family, work and life. Do this and you will be happy and content. Take Care.
Pin it. Love it.
