Most of us fondly remember bedtime stories that our parents read to us. But once we get into the cycle of jobs and career, reading usually takes the backseat. Our reading today is restricted to social media posts, tweets and daily news. But quality reading like books (fiction, self-help, motivation, biography, etc) hold immense benefits for everyone, from stress-relief to science-backed cognitive benefits.
Read on to find out why you should start the habit of reading today. Here are the 5 reasons for you to read and become a better version of yourself. I will suggest that you get hardcover copies of the book. Make a collection of your favourites for yourself and your loved ones.
1. Reading can help you de-stress
Reading a good book can make you briefly forget your everyday worries and help you unwind. It helps relax the mind which is why many people follow a nightly reading routine right before they sleep.
It is suggested to read a physical copy of a book instead of reading on a screen before sleeping. Screens like tablets, laptops, e-readers can actually hurt your sleep, keeping you awake longer. Relaxing is easier with a real book in hand, instead of a virtual one.
I have come up with a few books that will help you. The book by Spencer Johnson, M.D. ‘Who Moved My Cheese’ was one of the few books that I always remember whenever life throws a spanner or an obstacle in my routine. Change is essential, why you would ask. Change brings new thoughts to overcome whatever we are facing, it makes us more human, we grow within our outlook and become more mellow and intelligent. It teaches us another way to our goals, the better way. This might sound too aloof to you but think about a situation where you were almost pinned down or bogged down and you came out of it. Yes, sometimes we take a hit, that is life. However, do we submit every time, No, we don’t. You must have learned a better way after your situation. This book will rake your feathers and show you that you need to get out of your comfort zone and accept change. If we will not change, life will make us change. It’s better we anticipate a change and plan in the same way.
2. It is nothing short of a workout for the brain
When you cultivate a habit of reading regularly, your brain is required to remember the information that you read. As new memories develop, existing brain pathways are strengthened and new ones are also created. This helps in improving memory.
Quality reading helps you nurture the ability to evaluate details and think critically.
Improved concentration and focus are also developed during this process, both of which are great qualities to succeed in life. The more focused you are at something you do, the more productive you become.
3. Reading inspires creativity
Reading helps you gain knowledge, stimulates your imagination and in effect, encourages creativity. As you read more and creativity is inspired, it helps you maneuver easily through life and make important decisions.
Continuing the above theme of change in the environment it takes you to the change at a personal level. This book ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ by Stephen R. Covey is going to help you in your personal journey. It will guide your first baby steps to achieve what you intend to in life. How you percept and interpret the world will change after you read this book. Happy reading.
4. Reading good content can lead to better writing skills
Reading helps in expanding your vocabulary which will eventually reflect in your speaking and writing. When you read books written by the best creative minds, their writing style will influence your writing style. You will find it easier to write well-articulated content.
5. It can help you grow
Books can teach you about everything from relationships to advancing your career. As you read and gain new information, your knowledge will increase and you will grow wiser. The knowledge you gain from reading is invaluable and can be applied to every aspect of life.
The analytical skills that you gain from learning can help you in handling your life and work with a better approach.
As you gain better insight into different subjects and improve your speaking skills, you will make better conversation and it will help you gain more self-esteem.
This one has become a classic for our society. We try hard to get people to like and love us but are we taking the right steps and right people. How you interact with people and what you say is important. Why not to criticise and why to follow some principles in life. How really an honest compliment and appreciation can get you a lifelong friend. Thanks Dale. You will get to know all this and much more. It’s a good read.
While e-books are a great way to keep all your reading material on hand at all times. We still feel that a physical copy that you can hold in your hands can never go out of style. Whatever you choose, the most important thing is to start reading as soon as you can and see a change in yourself for the better.
Pin it. Love it.
