What are soft skills? How they help us? What can be done to master them. Read on to know the answers to these questions.
Soft skills are not your professional skills. These are skills that touch your peers, your clients and even your family at emotional and social level.
Soft skills represent your inner strength, effectiveness of your interpersonal communication and behavior. These can be mastered when you have the mind set for growth; you are self-aware and can take charge of your emotions.
Below are some skills listed that can be mastered and will get you through on the hardest day with a smile on your face (genuine smile) and make your day.
Grow yourself, everything is a challenge
If you look at any situation, even getting up from the bed in the morning is a challenge. Still most of us get up and get ready for our day ahead. This is an inbuilt mindset to take the challenge and master the situation. It’s a good trait for you to learn new things and grow in every sphere of life.
Focus on improving yourself and change will come to you in a good way. Do not blame or try to change others. Take charge of the situation and you will take charge of yourself.
Regulate your emotions
At work or home when you are angry, frustrated or discouraged, your ability to think and make right decision is hampered. Just clear your head by taking some deep breaths and think of clear blue sky or anything that gives you control over your emotions.
Our emotions are like a computer program, too many tasks at once almost shuts the system or overheats.
Doing one thing at a time is the best way to think. So, do you want to think clearly or do you want your emotions take charge and ruin everything. What will you want?
Give this book a try as it helped me personally to overcome emotional challenges.
Forget and forgive and you win
If you don’t forgive yourself or other and forget and move own, you are stuck forever. It’s like you have tied yourself to a tree and are trying to win the race.
Once you forgive and forget and move on; you will be free of the baggage, the weight that you were carrying. You will feel free to be happy, positive and succeed. So, do this and your smile will return to you in no time.
Smile is the best soft skill that you can master. It solves most of the problems in life and makes new friends.
Patience: Enjoy the game
You want to jump right in the situation, take control, and take over the world. Nope, this is not the way to shine.
You must have seen super hero movies or series. They all wait and understand the situation, just like Batman. Why a lion is called king of the jungle; patience.
Even in a crisis, take a moment out and take the action according to your long term goals.
Communication is a two way street. Verbal or written communication with your team or audience depends on your ability to listen to others. If you do not know what your team or audience requires or thinks about a subject or problem, you will not be able to address that issue.
Sometimes there are non-spoken words or issues that need to be understood with your sensitivity.
Between People: Interpersonal skills
Will you work with someone you don’t trust? The answer is No.
You build trust, relations (personal or professional), ethics, and you understand people, their skills, have emotional empathy for them and so on. This is also called social skill. If people around you feel good working with you then you get far in your career.
No we are not talking about Facebook and Twitter.
Unspoken words and cues, emotional empathy and responsibility are the key to be great at this skill set. You need to be sensitive at right times and unshaken in a crisis or a deadline.
Coaching the right person without making them feel negative is the finest skill. You can call it growth training if you like. Use of words and choice of words hold a lot in soft skills.
Smile is the biggest tool in your inventory of soft skills. I will tell you the story that will let you know what I mean.
There was a room full of candidates that were there for an interview. One of them smiled and talked briefly and shook hands for good luck after small talk with the other candidates.
After the interviews were over only two of the candidates were selected. One was with high level of experience and the other one was the guy who smiled and shook hands.
This candidate that smiled and shook hands was happy after receiving the appointment letter. While leaving the building he met one of the interviewers and thanked him and smiled and shook hands. To this the interviewer asked him, do you know why you were selected? To this, the candidate said may be I have given all the right answers.
To this the interviewer said that he was selected because in such a tense and competitive make or break environment he smiled and was ready to face anything.

People are always difficult and in the way of your targets and goals. Being soft and polite but being committed and firm is the right choice.
Don’t let the soft approach become a hindrance to your deal with such personalities. Mix and match a number of skills.
Rephrase your communication if you have trouble making a break through. Sometimes the person on the other side may be having difficulty in grasping what you are trying so hard to tell. Take it as a challenge. You will see a growth in your personality and mental attitude once you get through.
